Norway’s Squarehead Technology is joining the European Defense Fund’s European Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems (E-CUAS) project.
E-CUAS is working to develop counter-drone systems for countering Class I UAS, including military-grade systems, by integrating multiple systems. The project is in continuity with the Joint European sYstem for Countering Unmanned Aerial Systems (JEY-CUAS) project and will study, harmonise, and consolidate concepts of operations, use cases, user needs, and operational requirements.
Squarehead will contribute its detection and classification system using passive acoustic technology to E-CUAS. The company’s sensor is an acoustic array that passively detects and tracks Class I and II drones using machine learning algorithms. Multiple sensors can be grouped together to cover a 360-degree horizon, perimeter or border. The system collects and analyses sounds to classify drones and is able to separate these signals from other sounds in the area. Upon positive classification of a drone, the alarm, along with precise bearing to target, is forwarded to the operator screen or to the API-connected system.
