Researchers at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in South Korea have developed a drone detecting and tracking technology using an electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) interlocked radar system.
The system automatically aims the EO/IR sensor in the direction of the target detected by the radar subsystem, which was jointly developed by ETRI and Hanwha Systems. An article in Korea IT Times notes that it is “designed to detect small drones within five kilometres by using Ku-band instead of the more popular X-band used in the military.”
The article adds that the EO/IR subsystem “receives target information, acquires target images through an EO/IR camera, tracks targets up to three kilometres away, and determines whether a target is a drone within two kilometres”.
The system is now available commercially via Samjung Solution, which has been developing the technology since 2022 via a Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology and National Police Agency project.
Korea IT Times reports that the system was recently successfully tested in a practice drill where it remotely detected, tracked and neutralised drones.
