U-ELCOME trials continue at Milan/Malpensa with more cargo drone flights

Techno Sky has conducted a further series of night operations at Milan’s Malpensa Airport, Italy. On the nights of September 17 and 18, eVTOL drones flew beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) in the cargo transportation exercise.

The activity is part of the Italian Cluster coordinated by air navigation services provider ENAV within the SESAR Joint Undertaking U-ELCOME DSD Project coordinated by EUROCONTROL, which aims to implement U-space services to support UAS operations.

In a LinkedIn post, air traffic management and U-space researcher at ENAV, Giovanni Riccardi, said the drones covered 8 km between Malpensa’s Cargo City and a logistics warehouse, “demonstrating the usefulness of U-space services provided by D-Flight and seamless integration into airport operations thanks to the involvement of the IAM Coordination Center”. Riccardi acknowledged EuroUSC Italia S.r.l. and TopView S.r.l. in supporting the activities and NAIS for key performance indicator assessment. He also thanked Barbarini & Foglia and Sebi which participated in the demos as logistic operators.

This development follows the first set of test flights from Malpensa’s airport Cargo City to Barbarini & Foglia’s logistics warehouse in July. Further tests are scheduled for later this year.
