The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been informed by the Russian Federation that the remains of a drone were found within the territory of the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant.
The drone fragments were reported to have been located roughly 100 metres from the plant’s spent fuel nuclear storage facility. The IAEA was informed that the drone was suppressed in the early morning of 22 August.
IAEA Director General Grossi will assess the situation on site and discuss modalities for further activities as may be needed to evaluate the nuclear safety and security conditions of the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant.
“Military activity in the vicinity of a nuclear power plant is a serious risk to nuclear safety and security,” Director General Grossi said ahead of his visit to the plant this week to assess the situation.
Earlier this year, the IAEA said it was becoming increasingly concerned about drone activity in the vicinity of the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine after several drone attacks had been reported.
