Iran’s nominated Defence Minister proposes use of AI ‘to enable drone swarm operations’

The Iranian president’s nominee for the country’s next defence minister proposes advancing artificial intelligence across the country’s drone fleet to enable swarm flight operations, Iran’s Tasnim News Agency reports.

Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh, who currently serves as the deputy chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, presented his defence strategy last week. Tasnim News Agency said his proposals focus on expanding Iran’s aerial and naval warfare capabilities, missile technology, air defence systems, and aerospace division.

“A key part of his plan includes enhancing the Air Force by designing and producing ‘jump jets’, which are capable of vertical takeoff and landing,” Tasnim states. Among other measures, Nasirzadeh proposes boosting Iran’s space technology by enhancing satellite launchers and aiming to place over 20 satellites into orbit in the coming years.

His strategy also includes the export of military products, which the news agency says includes “expanding ties with neighbouring countries as well as Latin American and African states, and doubling the nation’s defence exports”.

The vote of confidence for the proposed ministers, including Nasirzadeh, is scheduled for tomorrow, August 21.
