Integrating connectivity and ground risk data for drone operations – Airborne RF

Telecom operators play a key role in the evolving drone landscape by collaborating with platforms which Common Information Service Providers (CISPs). As the industry continues to grow, the role of CISPs, supported by cutting-edge platforms and regulations, becomes paramount in building a safe and interconnected aerial future, says a blog published by AirborneRF. These partnerships extend the impact of telecom operators beyond traditional communication, contributing to a cohesive and efficient U-space.

According to the blog:

The world of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), is rapidly evolving, with increasing amount of BVLOS operations being approved both in rural and urban environments. Those operations necessitate a robust management solution, in the form of U-Space and its core services.

A central element in the U-Space ecosystem is the CISP. CISPs are central to disseminating both static and dynamic data from a single source of truth and are crucial for efficient traffic management of unmanned aircraft. In the European context, the U-space Regulation sketches out a framework not mandating a single CISP but allowing Member States the discretion to appoint one. This appointed CISP must comply with stringent requirements and ensure prompt information dissemination to relevant authorities. Connectivity, as delineated in the regulation, is a critical component, especially for network identification services throughout a drone’s flight.

A CISP providing service in a U-Space airspace has several data requirements. Two of the key aspects for the safety of drone operations are the awareness of the dynamic performance of the connectivity infrastructure and a real-time assessment of the ground risk posed by the operation. AirborneRF Hub has been developed as a solution to enable a single CISP to assimilate data from multiple telecommunication providers in a dynamic manner and recreate an aggregated picture of these key safety parameters. AirborneRF Hub leverages partnerships with the majority of telecommunication providers worldwide. The platform dynamically aggregate data from diverse telecommunication sources to offer CISPs a comprehensive overview of the operational landscape.

Telecommunications companies hold a central role in this rapidly growing drone space. Their collaboration with platforms like AirborneRF Hub is essential. By joining forces, telecom operators can deliver network coverage information and real-time ground risk assessments to Common Information Service Providers (CISPs). This partnership is designed to empower CISPs with the necessary tools for better airspace management, enhancing the safety and reliability of drone operations. At the same time, it ensures that sensitive data remains protected, and system integration remains streamlined and non-disruptive. With these partnerships, telecom operators extend their impact beyond traditional communication realms, becoming indispensable to the development of a cohesive and efficient U-space.

As the landscape of unmanned aerial systems continues to evolve, the role of CISPs, supported by robust platforms and regulatory frameworks, will be crucial in shaping a safe, efficient, and interconnected aerial future.
